TRPMS to improve voiding in patients with MS

Use of transcranial rotating permanent magnet stimulator (TRPMS) is a non-invasive, safe and effective strategy to improve voiding dysfunction (VD) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), reports a pilot trial published in Journal of Urology. Women with MS and a post-void residual/bladder capacity (%PVR/BC) >40% (n = 10) received ten consecutive 40-minute treatments with TRPMS to regions of interest of the brain determined by MRI during bladder filling/emptying cycles. After treatment, patients showed an increased activation in brain regions involved in the voiding phase in healthy people, a substantial decrease in %PVR/BC and improved bladder emptying symptoms. The promising results and the absence of adverse events suggest TRPMS is an effective and safe therapy to improve bladder voiding in patients with MS and warrants further investigation in larger studies.
