Gender-affirming therapy linked to mental health

High rates of depression, anxiety and self-harm are known in transgender people desiring but not yet receiving gender-affirming treatment. Now, the results of a longitudinal study of 178 people seen at a transgender health clinic in the UK show that depression scores improve significantly after 18 months of gender-affirming hormone treatment, with a mean decrease of 2.05 points (95% CI 1.38–2.72; P > 0.001). Anxiety levels, by contrast, declined only slightly in this study.
