Maintaining or restoring methylation of lysine 79 on histone H3 (H3K79) seems to be critical to preserve joint health and prevent the onset and progression of osteoarthritis (OA), but the mechanisms that regulate H3K79 methylation, other than the methyl transferase DOT1L, remain largely unknown. A new study identifies specific histone demethylases of the Jumonji C (JmjC) family as regulators of H3K79 methylation status in articular chondrocytes and suggests that targeting them can protect against OA.
