In decision-making tasks, there are often multiple possible strategic approaches, differing in terms of the information on which the decision will be based and the algorithms that are used to generate the decision variables (DVs) that drive behaviour. How the brain chooses between alternative strategies is poorly understood; however, Cazettes et al. now show that neuronal populations in the secondary motor cortex (M2) of mice simultaneously compute multiple DVs that support alternative strategic approaches to a foraging task.
