Mapping visceral sensations

In vivo two-photon calcium imaging was used to analyse the responses of individual neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) to stimuli from the mouse gut and upper airways. Sensory inputs from these organs targeted discrete neuronal ensembles that were arranged topographically according to body area. Vagal neurons conveying different signal types from the same organ targeted partially overlapping ensembles. Pharmacological blockade of GABAergic signalling in NTS broadened the range of sensory inputs that generated responses, suggesting that local inhibition sharpens NTS responses beyond that made possible by vagal axon sorting alone.
