Social isolation during childhood can negatively affect social behaviour later in life, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, Yamamuro and colleagues show that, in mice, social isolation during childhood reduces sociability in adult animals via increased inhibition of — and a reduction in activity in — a medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) to posterior paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (pPVT) circuit.
