Long-term risk of seizure following PRES

Patients with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) can develop seizures during the acute phase. A multicentre study has now provided evidence for an increased long-term risk of seizure following PRES. The researchers compared the risk of seizure after discharge between 2,095 patients hospitalized for PRES and 341,809 patients with stroke. Over a 0.9–1 year follow-up period, patients with PRES had a higher risk of seizure than patients with stroke, with a hazard ratio of 2.9. Notably, hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease were more common in those with PRES who had subsequent seizures. The findings suggest that counselling on the risk of seizures should be considered for the clinical management of PRES.
