Benefits of actin cytoskeleton stabilization

Pharmacological activation of the GTPase dynamin ameliorates podocyte injury in models of chronic kidney disease. Now Mukherjee and colleagues show that this protective effect is probably mediated through dynamin’s ability to crosslink actin filaments into branched networks, thereby modulating the stiffness and polarity of renal tubular epithelial cells. Activation of this crosslinking ability by a small-molecule agonist preserved kidney function in models of acute kidney injury and attenuated podocyte and tubular injury in a genetic model of Alport syndrome.
