Cell extrusion is a phenomenon of cell elimination from epithelia, which leads to the removal of potentially tumorigenic, less fit or damaged cells from the tissue, while maintaining tissue integrity. The common, molecular mechanisms driving cell extrusion have remained elusive. Mori et al. now identify ATP and reactive oxygen species (ROS) as key upstream cues for cell extrusion.
