The use of chromatin conformation capture techniques such as Hi-C has revealed that large scale genome organization involves the segregation of loci into gene-active (euchromatin) or gene-inactive (heterochromatin) compartments. Both compartments can be divided into subcompartments, the physical organization of which is unclear. Rosencrance et al. now show that megabases (Mb)-long domains on different chromosomes interact and form nuclear subcompartments.
