Biomolecular condensates are droplet-like macromolecular assemblies that form via liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS); as such, many of their properties can be studied from the point of view of physics. Agudo-Canalejo et al. now report in Nature that the process of wetting, whereby a liquid establishes a contact with a surface, underlies interactions of phase-separated droplets with membranes and is important for droplet sequestration during autophagy.
