Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, enables the fabrication of complex components with increased design flexibility and efficiency, making it a valuable tool in industries such as aerospace and energy. However, developing materials that can be 3D printed and can withstand harsh conditions, such as elevated temperatures and corrosive environments, remains a challenge. Medium-entropy alloys, a class of materials with multiple, but fewer than five, principal elements, have shown promise in delivering a balance of strength and ductility. Now, writing in Nature, Tim Smith and colleagues report the development of a novel medium-entropy alloy that can be used in additive manufacturing that demonstrates remarkable mechanical properties at high temperatures.
