Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) — organic compounds comprising multiple aromatic rings — are naturally found from petroleum to outer space. Single aromatic ring benzene and coronene, in which benzene is fully enclosed by a layer of outer fused rings, are readily available, but the next molecule in the series — circumcoronene, fully enclosed by two layers of fused rings — remains elusive. Now, writing in Angewandte Chemie, Jishan Wu and co-workers at National University of Singapore have synthesized free-standing crystalline circumcoronenes by solution-phase synthesis.
