Extensive tissue injury from stroke, trauma or burns is commonly followed by a period of immunosuppression and susceptibility to systemic infection — a major cause of death after sterile tissue injury. In particular, immunosuppression after injury is associated with a rapid and massive loss of T cells. A study published in Immunity reveals a new mechanism for how and why this occurs.
