Successful placentation, which involves invasion of extraembryonic trophoblast cells into the maternal decidua, is essential for both maternal and fetal health. Defective trophoblast invasion in early pregnancy is responsible for major pregnancy disorders including pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Reporting in Nature, Arutyunyan et al. describe a spatially resolved, single-cell multi-omics map of the entire maternal–fetal interface in human first-trimester pregnancy.
