Evolutionary insights right off the bat

Reference-quality genomes for six species of bats (Chiroptera), representing diverse lineages that span the major suborders Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera, have been published in Nature. From these genomes, the authors glean insights into the evolutionary origins of bats and the molecular basis of adaptive traits involved in immunity and sensory perception.

Using multiple sources for gene annotation, including short-read and long-read transcriptomic data as well as de novo and homology gene projections, the team annotated between 19,122 and 21,303 protein-coding genes for the six bat species, showing near-complete coverage of coding regions (99.3–99.7%) as well as high completeness for non-coding regions.
