Barrett oesophagus: deep-learning diagnosis?

Cytosponge-TFF3 is a non-endoscopic, minimally invasive diagnostic test for Barrett oesophagus, a precursor of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. A new study reports a semi-automated triage system using a deep-learning approach based on samples of the Cytosponge-TFF3 test. The approach, which was trained and validated on two independent multi-centre clinical cohorts (n = 2,331 patients and 4,662 pathology slides), combines automation with manual expertise by selecting challenging cases for manual review. Using a simulation study confirmed by an external validation cohort, the researchers estimated that in a cohort with a Barrett oesophagus prevalence of 7%, the triage-driven approach could reduce pathologist workload by 57%.
