Inflammation of the oral mucosa (periodontitis) leads to the expansion of pathobionts in the oral microbiota. This process can promote colitis in mice via colonization of the gut and the induction and migration of bacteria-reactive T cells to the gut, according to new research published in Cell. The new findings strengthen the links between the oral–gut axis and microbiome and immune-mediated mechanisms in IBD development.
