Metformin has been prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for over 30 years, and is often associated with weight loss. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of metformin on body weight have been unclear. A new paper in Cell Metabolism implicates GDF15 secreted from the kidney in this mechanism.
