The effects of the gut microbiota on host physiology, and potential mechanisms underlying these effects, have been debated for many years. Although there are conflicting findings in the literature, some studies indicate that the gut microbiota affects several physiological systems and diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). New research has assessed these effects, in the context of the changes that occur in the gut following bariatric surgery.
