Oestrogen has been known to reduce appetite and meal size. These anti-obesogenic effects are thought to be controlled by oestrogen acting on receptors in the brain, but the precise mechanisms are unclear. Now, Anat Biegon and colleagues report that alterations in the synthesis of oestrogen within the amygdala might contribute to obesity through actions on self-control.
