Sublobar resection is non-inferior to lobectomy in very early stage NSCLC

Lobectomy has been the standard-of-care surgical approach for stage IA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) since the publication of results from a landmark clinical trial in 1995. However, the implementation of CT-based screening in certain populations at risk has increased the frequency of detection of ‘very early stage’ NSCLC (diameter ≤2 cm and no lymph node involvement). Now, data from the international phase III CALGB 140503 trial confirm that sublobar resection is non-inferior to lobectomy in these patients.
