Wearable technology has become a familiar term when discussing health monitoring devices. As such, this smart technology must be easily applied to surfaces such as skin, be comfortable to wear, fatigue-resistant, and possibly even self-healing. Ion-conducting gel-based sensors like ionogels and hydrogels are often considered for these applications due to their soft and flexible nature, as well as their excellent conductance, optical, and mechanical properties. Writing in Materials Horizons, Xiangjie Zhao and colleagues working at Shandong Agricultural University, Key Laboratory of Agricultural Film Application of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Taishan University in China present an ionogel made in a simple one-pot photopolymerization reaction with polyacrylamide, amino-modified agarose, benzenetricarboxaldehyde (BTC), and ethyl-methylimidazolium chloride.
