Anions like O2− and F− are such good bridging ligands that neutral oxyfluorides rarely appear as discrete mononuclear complexes. This is a shame because these unsaturated species can teach us about metal–ligand bonding while also being relevant to nanotechnology and energy applications. A team led by Xuefeng Wang, Eugen Schwarz and Jun Li has now taken up the gauntlet of preparing and characterizing molecular Mn and Fe oxyfluorides. Their experimental and theoretical investigations in Inorganic Chemistry offer a new spectroscopic handle for charge and greater understanding of high-valent metal complexes.
