Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells specific for α-myosin heavy chain have a key role in immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated myocarditis, according to a new study. “ICIs have revolutionized cancer therapy but can result in immune-related adverse events, and ICI-associated myocarditis represents the most severe complication and an important new challenge in our patients,” says study investigator Javid Moslehi. “We identified the antigen that T cells recognize in ICI-related myocarditis, which brings us closer to understanding how this deadly toxicity can occur,” adds Margaret Axelrod, first author of the study.
