Single-cell profiling techniques have enabled the characterization of cellular diversity in the tumour microenvironment at high resolution. However, how cell-to-cell communication and the tissue architecture dictate complex biological process such as antitumour immunity remains unknown. Therefore, mapping the spatial organization of malignant, stromal and immune cells in different functional states may reveal clinically relevant cellular communities and propel the discovery of drug targets and biomarkers in oncology.
