Pulmonary alveolar epithelial type 2 (AT2) cells, a cell type with stem cell properties, have been suggested as the cell of origin in lung adenocarcinomas (LUADs), whereas the role of terminally differentiated AT1 cells in LUAD development and progression is less well understood. Two studies published together in Nature now show that AT1 cells have a role in both the initiation and suppression of LUAD.
