Tumour persistence under therapeutic pressure is a finely tuned balance between the processes of cell proliferation and death. Cancer cells dying by apoptosis generate damage signals that can stimulate tissue repair and compensatory proliferation in surviving cells of the tumour microenvironment, ultimately reinitiating tumour growth. Yet, whether a form of paracrine communication occurs directly between dying tumour cells and their neighbouring epithelial counterparts and how this potentially supports therapy resistance remains unclear.
