Despite their differences, the six regional metrology organizations work together to provide and advance the global equivalence of national measurements standards, as Hyun Min Park explains.

In this regard, regional metrology organizations coordinate the activities in order to meet the technical requirements of the mutual recognition arrangements in the shape of reviews — both within the organization and among others. It includes carrying out comparisons, and analysing and final acceptance of the calibration and measurement capabilities claimed by the national metrology institutes, for the entry into a database operated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures1. There are six regional metrology organizations in operation covering the specific regions: AFRIMETS for Africa, APMP for the Asia/Pacific region, COOMET for the Euro–Asian region, EURAMET for western Europe, GULFMET for the Middle East, and SIM for the American region.
