Using a photonic chip to generate the patterns of light needed for structured illumination microscopy could reduce the cost and complexity of super-resolution imaging.

Optical microscopy has been an ultimate tool of biological discovery since Hooke’s identification of cells (in a slice of cork) almost 400 years ago. Genetically expressed fluorescent proteins today allow highly specific multicolour labelling of living organisms, providing scientists with a live, dynamic, three-dimensional (3D) view of the processes of life in spectacular detail. However, the dimension d of the finest features that can be optically resolved in a conventional wide-field microscope is constrained by the diffraction limit of resolution.
