Addressing the needs of Ukrainian scholars at risk

To the editor — In the first days of the Russian invasion, it became clear that the war would affect the entirety of Ukrainian society, including scholars, research programmes and collaborations. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science, there were 60,000 researchers and 35,000 support staff in 2021 (ref. 1). Two weeks into the war, an estimated 4,000–6,000 scholars had already fled the country2. This number has probably grown substantially, but a large proportion of Ukrainian scientists remain in the country and face extraordinary difficulties.

The international scholarly community promptly reacted with various offers of support to their colleagues fleeing the conflict, but it soon became apparent that, without the systematic aggregation of opportunities, the support offers might not have been reaching the intended recipients. The need to gather opportunities in one place and to raise awareness about the conditions of Ukrainian scholars among the global research community laid the foundation for #ScienceForUkraine. We are now an initiative of about 100 volunteers based in 30 different countries actively seeking, collecting and disseminating information about opportunities for war-affected scholars.
