Learning analytics is a novel educational research approach that uses data to help us understand and improve the learning process. Xavier Ochoa explains how Latin America is the perfect showcase for all that learning analytics has to offer in the arena of education.

Learning analytics is a novel educational research approach that draws from learning, computer and data sciences. Its goal is to better understand and improve the learning process and the context in which it happens. Learning analytics uses the traces or sequence of data that students and instructors produce (or could produce) with their actions and interactions during the learning process. The main realizations of learning analytics are support tools that provide information and feedback to help students, instructors or administrators to take better academic decisions. Learning analytics has caught the attention of the educational sector worldwide; it has been mentioned by the Horizon Report (https://library.educause.edu/resources/2018/8/2018-nmc-horizon-report) as one of the main trends in higher education and the International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (https://solaresearch.org/events/lak) has been listed as one of the main venues for educational technology research.
