Single or multiple roads to genome reduction in related obligate endosymbionts. Most well-studied obligate endosymbionts infect the host only once and then diverge, hence all close relatives are obligate endosymbionts originating from the same transition. In the case of Polynucleobacter, obligate endosymbionts (S) and free-living (F) bacteria are intermingled in the evolutionary tree. A majority of the endosymbiont genomes reduced independently after transitioning from closely related but slightly different free-living bacteria.
