It is unlikely to be news to readers here that the Universe fascinates the general public, and that visualizations of astronomical phenomena are often aesthetically pleasing. However, what are the motivations of artists who translate astronomy into art? How do they transform what they observe in the cosmos into something tangible?

Polina Milikina and Thomas Leimer are the team behind publicartists, an initiative and exhibition gallery that for two weeks in June 2021 provided space for all kinds of art inspired by the Universe. Publicartists presented this exhibition in Vienna, where they brought together pieces from a diverse group of unknown, semi-professional and academic artists. The exhibition was meant to inspire the general public by providing art that is not only based on an astounding range of different techniques, but also covers a manifold spectrum of different topics. The Universe exhibition could also be enjoyed remotely, from the home office — or anywhere else on this pale blue dot — through a virtual 360° tour.
