The coarse blue solid lines are the predicted HR–moisture relationship using fm with a = 2.8cc − 0.046, b = 0.75, and θop calculated by Eq. (11) in Methods section. The coarse red dash and black dotted lines represent fm using the same a and b values as in the coarse blue solid lines but measured θop and assumed θop, θop = 0.65ϕ, respectively. Other lines represent widespread empirical moisture functions commonly used in Earth system models (see Supplementary Table 2)
