The gradient of O2 at the soil–atmosphere interface, O2, was calculated using the atmospheric O2 concentration and the simulated O2 concentration in the top numerical voxels of the soil cores. The inset plots show the distributions of the relative O2 concentration with respect to the atmospheric O2 concentration under different relative water contents (θ/ϕ = 0.85 and 0.68).
