In the manuscript, “Utilization and Prescription Patterns of Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitor Medications in the United States Military Health System,” the authors present several interesting and notable findings. Specifically, results highlight key contemporary trends and demographic shifts with erectile dysfunction (ED) management, as well as the impact of social, physical, and market forces on medication utilization.

The current study examines the rate and ratio of PDE5 inhibitor use among younger men. The authors report that the overall rate of ED in the active duty population is ~3%, which is lower than other studies suggesting rates ranging from 5 to 30% [1,2,3]. This lower rate may reflect a healthier overall population and the impact of screening men for health conditions at the time of their recruitment into the armed services. Despite this lower overall rate, nearly 15% of the PDE5 inhibitor use occurred among junior members (<25 years old) and supports other literature suggesting an increasing rate of ED diagnosed in younger men [4, 5].
