Botryoid cyst

A botryoid cyst is odontogenic in origin and a variation of the more common lateral periodontal cyst. It appears grape-like and is usually found in the mandible around the canine-premolar region. It is not as common as other radiolucencies found in this area, for example unilocular ameloblastoma, and has a high rate of recurrence.

Two years later, in July 2021, the patient returned as the symptoms had reappeared. The 15 was root treated; 14 was vital and not tender on percussion. CBCT showed recurrence of the botyroid cyst. The patient was rebooked for enucleation of the cyst in the upper right quadrant, which was carried out in August 2021.The cyst was enucleated once more, with curettage and saline irrigation. A small sinus perforation was noted and the flap was closed without complication. Enucleation was challenging as the cyst was attached to soft tissue and the roots of the tooth.
