'Variation among dentists in planning treatment' was and remains a ground-breaking paper; it is remarkable that in 1983, no record could be found of comparable research. The authors also represented an unusual combination for that time: a lateral thinking academic restorative dentist working with a health psychologist in an NHS-funded research unit (DHSRU). This simple, robust, but devastatingly effective study began to examine dental clinical decision-making. Unfortunately, it also provoked negative responses focused upon the messengers, rather than the message.
