Periodontal diseases, caries, and dental abscesses prevalence in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is a widespread treatment modality of the hematological malignancies [1]. Long term survivors of HSCT have delayed oral complications due to pre-HSCT conditioning as chemotherapy and radiotherapy [2]. Dental caries, periodontal diseases (PDs), and pulpal with or without periapical diseases(PAs) are the major types of dental morbidities that may present a challenge to the HSCT team [3]. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy provoke oral disease, especially hyposalivation. Furthermore, Hyposalivation is a major risk factor for oral diseases especially mucositis and dental caries [4]. Another important factor in inducing oral complication in HSCT is the microfloral shift to gram-negative microorganisms which induce the occurrence of dental and periodontal infections [5]. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the prevalence of dental morbidities among HSCT patients in comparison to the general hospital population.

We have conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of dental morbidities in a group of HSCT patients and the general hospital population among patients in REDACTED. We accessed the REDACTED Health Integrated Data Repository (IDR), through the NIH-funded i2b2 tool, provided by the REDACTED Health Office of the Chief Data Officer for the period of June 2011 to June 2019, and the diagnosis of HSCT and the dental morbidities such as dental caries, PDs and pulpal with PAs was obtained from queries using ICD-9 and ICD-10. The following parameters were recorded: dental morbidity, sex, and race. The prevalence ratios were used to compare rates between the groups. The relative risk and P-value were measured in the studied groups.
