A student guide to working with the lab for removable prosthodontics

One of the most important relationships you will have as a clinician throughout your career is with the dental lab. It is a General Dental Council (GDC) principle to work effectively with colleagues in our patients' best interests.1 Poor or no written instructions were provided in 50% of cases being provided by salaried NHS practitioners.2 A relationship can be established between good quality lab work and effective communication,3 with this leading to greater satisfaction amongst patients. To achieve successful outcomes for patients we must establish good communication procedures with the dental technician, being clear, accurate and timely. Our patients rely on us to be able to convey their wishes across to the lab and achieve said outcomes.
