When the thought of medical problems interfacing dentistry comes to mind, Crispian Scully is likely to be a name that would soon follow. Amongst the many publications that bear his name, Scully's Medical Problems in Dentistry remains the most comprehensive and authoritative text of its kind. It comes with no surprise that with the continual advances in research and new clinical discoveries, the scope of medicine is constantly changing. This series aims to highlight medical problems that are likely to be encountered in practice and how to recognise their clinical presentation. First in this series, attention will be drawn towards an autoimmune, gastrointestinal disease with an increasing prevalence and a disconcerting lack of diagnosed cases.
