NHS England's Long Term Workforce Plan explained

In June, the NHS released its Workforce Plan, detailing how the government will use a combination of workforce policies to meet expected demand for NHS services, including dentistry, by 2038.1 Analysis by the British Dental Association Policy and Research Team has identified a number of shortcomings regarding the viability of the proposals, which would require substantial public investment to achieve.

The workforce plan covers a period from 2023 to 2037. Its stated aim is to assess the key areas of need within the health service in England in regard to recruitment and retention. It identifies where growth in employment is required to meet the needs of the service long term. Targets for the future workforce are based on a mixture of current workforce needs and future expectations regarding population growth and demographic shifts which will impact demand, for instance the rising average age of the population.
