The role of reflection within dentistry

Reflection is the combined process of consideration and internalisation of our actions. It is the contemplation and exploration of results towards changing actions to improve positive outcomes in the future.1 This allows identifying the paradigms that form our actions in addition to our development as a whole, including assumptions, frameworks, thought and behaviour.2

Often associated with learning, recent practice dictates reflection is embedded within healthcare and training pathways. With a move towards a competency-based curriculum, reflection provides the foundations for life long self-learning.3
