Bees and dentistry: Are the two linked?

So what's all the buzz about? I hear you ask. Bees and dentistry? We all know our grandmother's recipes of honey with a bit of this and that when we are feeling a bit run down. As a dentist and beekeeper, I have always been intrigued not only by the medicinal benefits of honey produced by bees but the other products they create, one such being propolis, which I will talk about in this article.

Bees produce a number of nutritionally rich products including, royal jelly, bee pollen, honey and propolis. Propolis is a gummy resinous material made by bees from resins gathered from the leaf buds and bark of a variety of trees, shrubs and plants. Mixed with the bee's salivary excretions it becomes a sticky filler substance 'bee glue'.
