Seeing the big picture of the dental landscape

How do you see the big picture when things are hidden or obscured? The dental landscape is often difficult to see clearly or really get an appreciation of, particularly if you are an associate with a nose to the grindstone. You need the right data for the job, you need to understand how to interpret the world around you and most of all, how do you know what you don't know? An analogy often helps. How many of you are familiar with the mountaineering term 'false peaks'?

One internet source I read describes them as 'a peak that appears to be the pinnacle of the mountain but upon reaching, it turns out the summit is higher. False peaks can have significant effects on climbers' psychological states by inducing feelings of dashed hopes or even failure'.
