Reconsidering retrospective review of neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants treated for neonatal abstinence syndrome

Merhar and colleagues [1] employed a retrospective chart review to locate children with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) who were administered the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID) at a median age of 23 months. A total of N = 87 children scored lower than the normative sample on the BSID cognitive, language, and motor scales. They suggest, “close medical follow-up and screening so that intervention can be initiated in a timely fashion” for these children.
