The working group on Thrombosis and hemostasis of the European Society for Paediatric Haematology and Immunology has collected 209 cases of thrombosis in children. The main results found in this study are reported. The incidence of thrombotic events was 23% (48/208) within the first year of life (10% of the total number in the first month) and 76% between the 1st and the 17th year. Sixty-five % (127/209) of the episodes were venous thromboses and 39% (82/209) were arterial. In the venous district 61% were deep vein thromboses (DVT), 28% were in the Central Nervous System (CNS) and 10% in the portal vein. In the arterial district 67% were in the CNS. Twenty % (40/209) of the thrombotic events were idiopathic while in 80% (169/209) acquired or congenital diseases such as oncologic disease 19%, infections 18%, congenital heart defects 14%, renal diseases 9% and prematurity 8% were present. Nearly half of the patients (53%) received thrombolitic or anticoagulant treatment while 47% did not. A detailed and extensive analysis of these cases was performed to prepare a prospective study focused mainly on the research of the thrombotic risk in pediatric age and on the peculiarity of the treatment.
