Lecture Presentations

(Presented by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation)

The March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology was created as a tribute to Dr. Jonas Salk shortly before his death in 1995. The March of Dimes Prize is awarded annually to investigators who have made a seminal discovery in developmental biology.

This year's March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology goes jointly to Porfessors Gehring and Hogness for their discovery of homeobox genes. A major goal of Developmental Biology is to unravel the processes controlling development from the fertilized egg to the mature organism, and hence the abnormalities that lead to birth defects. Homeobox genes are key factors in regulating body plan and organ development in species as diverse as worms and humans.

You are invited to hear lectures by these two pre-eminent scientists whose work on homeobox genes has opened a window into the mechanism controlling critical aspects of development.

1997 Recipients

Walter Jakob Gehring; Professor, Department of Cell Biology; Biozentrum University of Basel

David S. Hogness; Munzer Professor, Department of Developmental Biology and Biochemistry; Stanford University School of Medicine

The lectures will be presented on Monday, May 5, 8:30 am
