Preterm infants (BWT≤1750 g, GEST≤34 weeks) were fed either a`preterm' (discharge-6m corrected age; gp A), or a`term' (discharge-6m; gp B), or both (`preterm' from discharge-term, `term' from term-6m; gp C) infant formulas. Body composition was measured, using DEXA, at discharge, either term or 3 months, and at 6 months of corrected age. The data was analysed using ANOVA.
RESULTS: At isocaloric intakes infants in B and C grew more poorly than in A. Differences were reflected in a lower lean body mass (LBM), bone mineral mass (BMM) and density (BMD), total body (TBF) and% body (% BF) fat. Table
CONCLUSIONS: Dietary manipulation significantly affects body composition in preterm infants.
